MEN AND COMMUNICATION

I read a study many years ago on the differences between males and females in communication. When I have time I will track down the original study, but as I remember it, it went something like this.

Researchers attached cordless microphones to some preschool children and recorded what came out of their mouths as they interacted all day long at preschool. The results were fascinating. They discovered that 100% of what came out of the mouths of girls were words. Seventy percent of what came of the mouths of little boys were sounds: truck sounds, gun sounds, explosions, bangs, thuds, etc. Girls were not only compelled to dialogue with each other about all their interaction, but they processed their thoughts out loud. As boys played, they used words to set up the action, but the action required sound effects. Sounds expressed what was important to boys. And it seems that not much has changed.
